Following a short apprenticeship in Cologne under Johann Hulsman, Ermels continued his training in Holland. Here he turned to landscape painting, under the inflence of Jan Both. He resided in Nuremberg from 1660 until his death. Although there is no documentary evidence of a trip to Italy, ancient ruins play an important role in many of Ermel's paintings and drawings. He is included in Sandrart's "Teutsche Akademie" of 1675.
