A Bavarian wooden figure of Saint Barbara, circa 1500

Carved in the round. With extensive remains of original polychromy, the blue areas and the reverse overpainted. A crowned figure of the saint standing in contrapposto holding a chalice in her left hand, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The elongated proportions of the figure are accentuated by the pleating of her gown and the broad folds of her tightly drawn cloak.
The formerly pegged right hand lacking, the chalice replaced. Wear with minor losses. Front right edge of the plinth replaced. Height 77 cm.
