A presumably Swabian wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1500
Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. The crowned Virgin is depicted standing in contrapposto holding the Christ Child over Her hip and handing Him an apple. Her floor-length gown is almost completely obscured by a cloak worn draped around her shoulders and held across Her body to create a rich pattern of folds.
The crown possibly ammended, the tips replaced. Minimal wear. Height 102 cm.
Private ownership, Switzerland.
