Franconia circa 1510/1520

A Franconian wooden figure of Saint John, circa 1510/1520

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A full-figure depiction of the saint standing in contrapposto, holding his attribute in his hands. The facial features are finely and characteristically modelled. The cloak covering the otherwise nude body of the saint is also very well carved, worn held together at his neck with a clasp and drawn across his lower body, with the contours of the broad, deeply undercut hems forming an effective contrast to the thick curving and diagonal folds of the centre.
Several vertical hairline cracks. Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a newer wooden plinth. Height 97 cm (without plinth).
