Flemish 1st quarter 16th century

A Flemish carved wood group of the harrowing of hell, first quarter 16th century

Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Christ is shown in the underworld, leading the souls of the dead out of the gaping mouth of hell, which is watched over by a demon and a grotesque hound. The side of the sculpture is slightly flattened, indicating that it originally formed part of an altarpiece.
Minimal vertical cracks. Christ's right forearm replaced. Wear with minor losses. 41 x 26 x 14 cm.

Provenance
