Sheep in a Mountainous Landscape

Oil on panel. 60 x 82 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Eugène Verboeckhoven 186[?].

Journeys to Switzerland and to Italy in 1841 greatly expanded Eugène Verboeckhoven's landscape repertoir. Whereas he had previous painted the flat meadow views of the Netherlands and of his Flemish homeland, those now were supplemented by depictions of snow-capped mountains. These works display the influence of Alexandre Calame, whom he met on his travels. However, despite the change in backdrop, finely painted fauna remained the focus of Verboeckhoven's landscapes.
