Franz Ludwig Catel
The Bay of Naples with Fishers and Shell Collectors
Oil on canvas. 62.5 x 78 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: F. Catel Roma 50.
Catel travelled to Naples for the first time in 1812 and returned there numerous times during the decades that followed. Alongside depictions of the surroundings of Rome, views of the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius and Capri, as well as those of the Gulf of Pozzuoli with Capo Miseno and Ischia, became the artist's trademarks and were avidly collected throughout Europe.
The present coastal view of Naples is enriched by the depictions of two fishers with their boat and two mussel collectors.
Private collection, West Germany.
