Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove

On the Gracht

Oil on canvas (relined). 50.5 x 65 cm.
Signed lower left: B. J. van Hove.

Romantic cityscapes and church interiors make up a significant proportion of Bartholomeus van Hove's oeuvre, and the present work is a particularly fascinating and atmospheric example. Rays of sunlight penetrate the blanket of grey clouds to illuminate an opulent baroque townhouse, before which an elegant carriage waits upon its occupant. Walking beside the canal we see a mother and child and a greengrocer with his barrow full of wares, and in the background a small bridge is crossed by men rolling barrels, and horse carts.
Van Hove worked as a theatre painter and created sets for numerous Dutch playhouses. He exerted a considerable influence on 19th century painting through his many pupils. They included numerous well-known artists such as Charles Leickert, Salomon Leonardus Verveer, Petrus Gerardus Vertin, Johannes Bosboom and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch.
