Adolf van der Venne was the son of Dutch migrants and studied at the fine arts academy of Vienna. He specialised in depictions of rural life and animals, especially horses. He later moved to Munich after spending several years in the north Serbian town of Erba during the 1860s, where he worked on religious paintings.
