Anselm Feuerbach

Portrait of Mathilde Harrich

Oil on canvas (relined). 74.5 x 60 cm.

This work, the whereabouts of which had remained unknown since the Feuerbach memorial exhibition in 1929, was already known to Uhde-Bernays, who listed it under no. 230 in the 1911 catalogue raisonné. However, he did not know the lady's identity, referring to the work as “Portrait of Frau von G” and dating it to 1863. He was obviously not aware of the label to the back of the piece, written in Karlsruhe in 1910 by Frau Geheimrat Fischer, née Harrich, the sitter's sister. She writes there that the work was painted by Anselm Feuerbach in 1854 and commissioned by her father in Heidelberg.
