Bathed in the soft, pinkish light of the evening sun, the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo with the dome of San Tommaso da Villanova crowns the Alban mountains to the south east of Rome. In this work, we see peasant men and women with their animals and a traveller stopped in their tracks to kneel in reverence as the pope strolls along the tree-lined path towards lake Alban with a retinue of clergy. In the distance, we see a black coach making its way towards the viewer from Castel Gandolfo. The deep view into the landscape with the papal residence in the background and the warm light effects accentuate the devotional mood of the image.
