We know very few details concerning the life of the Italian artist Ettore Forti, except that he painted genre and narrative works mainly showing scenes from ancient Rome. His paintings are reminscent of those of the British artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema in their exacting style and painstaking attention to architectural details. The present work focusses mainly upon the depiction of the two young women - one is shown playing an instrument whilst the other languishes with a scroll in her hand. The work's erotic undertones are thinly veiled and additionally, discretly underlined by the two fluttering doves.
