Gaston Claris was a soldier before becoming a painter, serving as an artillery lieutenant during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. He began to devote all of his time to painting as of 1877, and was taught by Ernest Meissonier. He is known for his minutely detailed war and military scenes, such as the present work, which shows a scene from the Franco-Prussian war.
