Two women and a man are shown working under the midday sun in the garden of a thatched cottage in a panoramic landscape. Their little daughter is shown with her wooden rake shouldered, gazing absent-mindedly into the blooming flowerbed. Chickens pecking at the dry earth and a farmer ploughing the land in the background complete the pastoral idyll. However, not even this detailed and finely painted vision of the peaceful countryside remains entirely untouched by the advancing march of industrialisation, as we see when we look towards the horizon.
