Rau began his studies at the academy in Dresden when he was just 14 years old, finishing in 1852. He travelled to Italy for the first time in 1858 and stayed there for four years. His second trip to Italy lasted from 1866 to 1867, and it was presumably during this time that he painted the present watercolour whilst travelling through the south Tyrolese Alps.
