Anselm Reyle

Untitled
2009

Mixed media on canvas in acrylic glass. 71.5 x 60.5 x 18.5 cm.

„Later, Reyle further developed this box format to create the iridescent Plexiglas fronts behind which the famous folded silver foil is hidden in dim light. His is an unerring sense for the epitome of urban decorating phenomena and appearance-deluxe. This can all seem very close to reality, as in the almost unaltered Ready Mades, for instance the façade siding from former East Germany in Wernigerode from 2002 or, more currently, the cashier booth in the Deichtorhallen or as a likeness of an otherwise uniform modernism, a purely abstract and yet solemn deco junk. The composition and contents of the images, for instance the foils packed into colored acrylic glass cases, are in part direct references to modern predecessors, for instance Arman's paint tube accumulations, Yves Klein's blue monochromes, or a conceptual work like Sol LeWitt's Untitled (1979), which shows a crumpled city map of Chicago. Reyle combines these influences with the surfaces of Modernism that have gone on to become recognized as high-cultures - from Cubism and Informel, Op-Art, abstraction and Minimalism to Arte Povera and Neo-Geo - and irritates the viewer by suspending habitual functions and classifications.” (Dirk Luckow, Reine Formsache, in: Dirk Luckow (ed.), Anselm Reyle, Mystic Silver, exhibition catalogue, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Berlin 2012, p.18/19)
