Drahomir Jozef Ruzicka

Pennsylvania Station, New York
1921

Vintage toned gelatin silver print. 34.7 x 27.2 cm (35.4 x 27.9 cm). Signed, dated and negative number in pencil as well as annotated in an unknown hand in pencil and crayon on the verso.

"Ruzicka's most well-known Pennsylvania Station photograph shows a centrally placed man, wearing a hat and overcoat, his umbrella at his side. Though seen at a great distance, the slightly confrontive figure anchors both the formal composition and the mental impression it creates. The man's importance [...] can only be fully appreciated by imagining the setting without him. Ruzicka also exploited the spectacular light effects available in Pennsylvania Station. While he was careful about the positions of this human subjects, he paid particular attention to the light and atmosphere surounding them." (cit. from Christian A. Peterson, in: Christian A.
