Circa 1913

Oil on canvas, relined 65.5 x 47.5 cm Unsigned. - Minor rubbing right next to margins. Weak craqueleur mainly to background and few small retouches to upper and lower margin and to rose-coloured area.

Walter Ophey used the same fragment of a Madonna here as in his painting “Madönnchen” from 1912 (Kraus G 320). The heavily coloured and patterned fabric design can also be found, among others, in “Begonien-Stilleben” painted around 1913 (Kraus G 345), and with regards to the enveloping resp. covering as well as the facture and choice of an old fragment of sculpture, our “Grüne Madonna” is similar to “Alte Holzfigur II” from circa 1913-1915 (Kraus G 365).
