Geometric shapes and their compositions are counted among the central themes within Sol Le Witt's creative work of. A pioneer of minimalism and a cofounder of conceptual art, in his oeuvre Sol Le Witt experiments with architectonic spatial structures, with grid constructions and repeatedly with different variations of cubes that he forms according to his fundamental minimalist principles and which he reflects with his theoretical idea of art. “The conceptual part of LeWitt's work, the definition of the artistic idea, is often a semiological hybrid form composed of analogue (visual) und coded (verbal) signs. They thus sit exactly on the demarcation line of the old conflict between text and image. Execution (or interpretation) is then a purely visual affair, but the information content and structure are preserved, conversion of the idea being quasi mechanical. Due to this systematic division of conception and execution, LeWitt's work offers points of departure, or rather structural models, for a semiotic analysis of the abstract image.” (Franz W. Kaiser, Zeichnung als Notation, oder einfach als Zeichnung, in: Susan Singer (ed.), Sol LeWitt Drawings 1958-1992, exhib.cat., Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag 1992, n.pag.)
