Johann Christoph Rincklake, attributed to

The Deposition of Christ after Domenichino

Oil on canvas, mounted on wood. 69 x 61 cm.

Johann Christoph Rincklake, the most important painter of the Westphalian aristocracy and bourgeoisie around 1800, also made numerous copies of old master paintings, including Correggio's "Holy Night", kept the in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie, Guido Reni's "Judith with the Head of Holofernes" in the Galleria Spada in Rome, and Raphael's "Sixtine Madonna", also in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie (cf. H. Westhoff-Krummacher: Johann Christoph Rincklacke, Munich & Berlin 1984, no. 20 & 21, p. 289, no. 211 & 211.1, p. 404ff). The present work is presumably the piece mentioned in the auction catalogue of Rincklake's estate sale in Münster in 1815 as no. 19: "Eine Grablegung Christi nach Domenichino. Copie von Rincklake. Hoch 2 Fuss 4 Zoll, breit 2 F. 1 Z.; auf Leinw. mit vergoldeten Rahmen."
