An engraved tin "willkomm" goblet of the barrel-maker's guild in Wilster

A goblet and cover with a finial formed as a standard bearer and decorated with two rows of lion's head mascarons, supported on three lion-shaped feet. The cup exterior engraved: "DIESES EMPLICHE MEISTERWERKS DES LÖBLICHEN HANDTWERCKS DER KIEMERS ANDE BÖTTICHERS AMBT INDER WILSTER HABEN DISEN WILLKÖHM MACHEN LASSEN (...) ANNO 1669". With tin hallmarks. H 69, with standard 85.5 cm.

Literature

For the mark, cf. Hintze, Die deutschen Zinngießer, vol. III, Aalen 1964, no. 2364. Arend Wiese was born in Buxtehude and apprenticed in Lübeck under Harmen Godt. He became a citizen of Wilster in 1666 and joined the Hamburg office as an outside master in 1680. A further published vessel by this master, namely a jug, is kept in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.
