With 14 drawers arranged around a central, removable compartment with mirrors to the sides, ebony and ivory chequerboard marquetry to the bottom, and a parcel gilt silver relief of a man digging to the back. The central, small drawer in the lower section is a secret compartment. Restored, partially overpainted, the mirror to the interior cracked. 52 x 70.5 x 31.5 cm.
Italy, 17th C.

The layered limestone known as "pietra paesina", with its famous silhouettes of fanciful mountains and edifices, is traditionally quarried near the Arno river in the florentine region. Particularly fine pieces were used to inlay cabinets such as the present work and in mineral collections throughout the 16th / 17th centuries.
