A late Gothic Limoges enamel medallion of the Virgin as "sedes sapientiae"

Polychrome enamel on a slightly arched copper panel, with white highlights in relief, so-called "paillons" of silver foil, greyish brown counter enamel with white inclusions, gilt decor and a gilt copper frame. Depicting the enthroned Virgin and Child before a starry night sky. The Virgin is dressed in a blue cloak with gilt ornaments that falls in a fine interplay of Gothic drapery over a deep red gown. The crown and green halo are decorated with paillons. Christ is depicted in a pale green robe with a reddish brown halo. In a finely wrought twisted silver frame with the original suspension loop. With hairline cracquelure, wear to the gilding, minor chips and losses to the paillons. H of frame 8.9 cm.
1st quarter 16th C., tentatively attributed to the Pénicaud workshop.
