A pair of Limoges enamel medallions with Roman Caesars

Polychrome enamel and gilding on slightly domed copper panels, transluscent counter enamel, gilt copper frames. Round panels depicting mounted figures before dark backgrounds, inscribed: "AVLVS VITELLIVS CAESAR AVGVSTVS VIII" and "C DIVI FIL IVL CAESAS OCTAVIANVS AVGVSTVS II". D 22 cm.
Late 17th / 18th C.

These pieces depict the Roman Emperor Aulus Vitellius (ca. 12 B.C. to 69 A.D.) commander of Germania Inferior, who crowned himself emperor on 2nd January 69 in Cologne, and Augustus (63 B.C. to 14 A.D.), the great-nephew and successor to Caesar, and 1st Roman Emperor.
