The Death of the Virgin

Oil on panel (parquetted). 100 x 96 cm.

This work shows the dying Virgin in a bed surrounded by praying and mourning figures of the apostles. The youthful Saint John helps Her to support the two crossed candles She holds in Her hands whilst Peter blesses Her with an aspergillum. The diagonal composition of the bed, the tightly packed arrangement of the apostles, characteristic facial features and colour palette all indicate this to be the work of a South German artist. The panel would originally have formed part of an altarpiece, the framing structure of would have concealed the unpainted areas.
