The Virgin Enthroned

Oil on panel. 35 x 25 cm.

This motif of the Madonna enthroned beneath a brocade canopy in a panoramic landscape can already be found in the works of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling, who were both active in Bruges. The Virgin sits dressed in a richly decorated deep red gown and a red cloak before a row of lancet windows with double-storied gothic tracery and red marble columns. She gazes wistfully down towards Her naked Son with eyes half closed, supporting Him at the waist with a gentle grip and lightly touching His left foot. The Child is depicted as attentively sitting up straight and holding a chain, presumably an allusion to the rosary.

Provenance
