The Adoration of the Magi
Oil on panel (parquetted). 51.1 x 38.5 cm.
This panel reiterates, with only minor differences (including the portrait format), a variation of the "Adoration of the Magi" kept in the Art Institute of Chicago. The work was formerly attributed to Lucas van Leyden (M. Friedländer, Lucas van Leyden, 1963, illus. 33), but modern research no longer supports this claim. A third version, attributed to Ambrosius Benson, is kept in the Kaplan Collection in New York. Presently, none of the works have been attributed to any specific artist, but this was a very popular motif in the early 16th century.
Auctioned by Lempertz, Cologne 5.6.1975, lot 6. - Private collection, Rhineland.
