Francesco Codino, attributed to

Still Life with Fruit, Nuts, and a Throttle

Oil on panel. 29 x 26 cm.

This still life was first published by Dr. Nicosetta Roio. It can be stylistically grouped together with a number of works attributed to the North Italian painter Francesco Codini and dated to between 1612 and 1631. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bott was able to identify this artist as being identical with the German Franz Godin. The similarity of the names and artistic style give a relatively clear indication that Codini and Godin were in fact the same person.

Francesco Codino often painted from a lowered viewpoint, as in the present work, and his paintings were generally still lifes representing the same objects but in differing arrangements. The porcelain bowl with the moulded rim, the cherries, and the walnuts are to be found in many of his other compositions. The panel upon which this work is painted has been cut vertical to the grain of the wood as opposed to horizontally, and thus the rings of the tree are visible from the centre of the piece to the edges.

We would like to thank Prof. Alberto Cottino for his attribution of this work to Francesco Codino upon examination of high resolution photographs.
