Marcantonio Bassetti

Saint Augustine

Oil on canvas (relined). 146.5 x 100 cm.

Following his apprenticeship in the workshop of Felice Brusasorci in Verona, Bassetti moved to Venice, where he met the Venetian painter Palma Giovane and began to collaborate with him soon after. Bassetti later moved to Rome in circa 1616, where he worked together with Carlo Saraceni and was strongly influenced by his and by Orazio Borgianni's Carravaggesque style. He later became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and participated in the decoration of the Sala Regia in the Palazzo Quirinale from 1616 to 1617.
In Rome he also painted the martyrdoms of Saints Rustico, Fermo and Vito for the Augustine Church in Munich. Bassetti returned to his home town of Verona in 1620, where he received commissions for various altarpieces. He also painted several portraits during this time, some of which can today be viewed in the Museo del Castelvecchio in Verona. Bassetti died of the plaque in Verona in 1630.
