Maerten Fransz. van der Hulst

Horse and Cart Crossing a Wooden Bridge

Oil on panel (parquetted). 24 cm diameter.

This round panel was exhibited in 1953 as the work of Jan van Goyen in the exhibition "Schilderijen uit Gentse verzamelingen" in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent. However, in 1991, Hans-Ulrich Beck convincingly attributed the work to the painter Maerten Fransz. van der Hulst, who was active in Leiden from 1644 - 1645 (cf. Beck: Künstler um Jan van Goyen, vol. IV, Augsburg 1991, p. 180-181, illus.). The present work can presumably be assigned to van der Hulst's early period, in which he painted various river landscapes in vivid green and brown hues on round or oval panels, in the manner of his contemporary van Goyen. We would like to thank Ellis Duullaart (RKD) for examining high resolution photographs of this piece and confirming it to be an original work by Maerten Fransz. van der Hulst.
