Oil on canvas (relined). Each 63 x 60 cm..

Nicosetta Roio published the present work for the first time in 2012, attributing it to Angelo Maria Rossi. This artist was active in Lombardy in the second half of the 17th century. Long unidentified, Rossi was formerly known as "Pseudo Fardella" or "Pittore di Carlo Torre" (cf. G. Cirillo/G. Godi, Le Nature Morte del Pittore di Carlo Torre, Pseudo Fardella, Parma 1996). Due to his works' stylistic similarities to those of Simone del Tintore, Rossi was previously assumed to have been active in Tuscany. Based on a painting monogrammed "A.M.R", Cirillo was able to assign a small but homogenous group of works to this artist (cf. G. Cirillo, Angelo Maria Rossi alias "Pittore di Carlo Torre", in: Parma per l'Arte, IX, issue 1-2, 2003, p. 77-79). Rossi is documented in the archives of Milan and Bergamo during the 1660s.
In his still lifes, the artist favoured plain backgrounds which allowed the vivid colours of the brightly lit flora and fauna to stand out in their informal arrangements.
