Francesco Simonini

Battle Scene

Oil on canvas (relined). 99.5 x 145.5 cm.

Simonini was already highly renowned as a battle and landscape painter during his lifetime. After training as an artist in Florence under the patronage of the Piccolomini family, where he was able to study the works of Borgognone and Pandolfo Reschi, he later moved to Venice. There he worked as a painter and consultant to the art patron and collector Count Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg. The present work clearly displays the influence of Pandolfo Reschi, and is a rare example of Simonini's early oeuvre. The piece has been securely attributed to this artist by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri.
