Johann Christian Vollerdt

Wooded River Landscape with a Farmhouse and Ruins

Oil on canvas (relined). 62 x 77 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Vollerdt p. 1760.

Johann Christian Vollerdt was first taught at the private school run by the engraver Paul Christian Zinck in Leipzig, before moving to Dresden to apprentice under Johann Alexander Thiele in 1738. He worked as a supraporte painter before specialising in landscapes from 1758-69. The present work is a typical example of his undulating, rocky scenes comprising views into multiple, stacked layers of land. His compositions are both soft and vigorous, and betray the influence of Thiele, whilst displaying Vollerdt's unique signature style. This painter's idealised scenes can be counted among the late baroque predecessors to the more sensitive image of nature propagated by neoclassicism.
