Georg Ludwig Eckhardt was born in Hamburg in 1770. As the son of an art dealer, he came into contact with works of art and literature early on. His artistic talent attracted considerable interest in his home town, and his portraits and landscapes were highly sought-after. However, he was sickly throughout his life and passed away aged just 25. This moonlit harbour scene displays the influence of French art and was painted when the artist was 18 years old. Eckhard was not only a painter, but also authored literature on art.
