Bartholomäus Spranger, copy after

The Holy Family with the Pear

Grey and white wash. 26.5 x 22 cm.
Framed.

This deftly rendered drawing is a copy of a famous composition by Bartholomäus Spranger, which was made into an engraving by Hendrik Goltzius. The current owner purchased the work from Houthakker art dealership in 1970 as Joachim Wtewael after Goltzius. Anne Lowenthal (op.cit.) accepted this attribution in 1975, but not in her monograph on the artist of 1986. The older attribution is generally no longer accepted, and the work is instead thought to be a contemporary gouache after the engraving. We would like to thank Stijn Alsteen for his kind help in cataloguing this piece.

Provenance

Bernard Houthakker art dealership, Amsterdam 1970 (attributed to Wtewael). - Private collection, North Germany.
