Northern Spain 14th century

A 14th century Northern Spanish carved wood Corpus Christi

Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse of the torso flattened. With uniform older polychromy.. A figure of Christ crucified with three nails, with His head tilted to one side, His arms slightly raised and His legs crossed. The anatomy is depicted in detail, but in an abstract manner, which forms an interesting contrast to the finely pleated perizonium. This expressive Corpus Christi can be allocated to the region of Northern Spain/Castile.
Vertical crack with an old restoration to the perizonium (stabilised with linen). Cracks to the reverse, wear with losses to the toes. Height 105 cm, width of arms 85 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Belgium.
