An early 16th century carved oak figure of the Virgin and Child, probably Meuse Region. Madonna mit Kind

Carved in the round, the upper reverse only summarily carved. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin standing in contrapposto holding the Child over Her hip, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin's gown, the vertical pleats of which reach down to Her feet, is concealed for the most part by the irregular folds of the cloak draped about Her body.
With vertical hairline cracks. The Child's hands and legs and the Virgin's crown lost. The left hand and a small area to the side of the Virgin's hair replaced. With wear throughout. Height 73 cm.
