Winterhalter's portraits of ladies, whether of bourgeoisie or aristocratic descent, in their opulent gowns of shimmering silk, fine lace, and wispy tulle justified his reputation as one of the leading painters of his time. These two studies from his estate pay tribute to the attention he paid to the depiction of fabric and its drapery.
