Jean-François Raffaelli

A Street Scene in Front of Notre Dame

Watercolour and gouache on paper. 38 x 36 cm.
Signed lower right: Raffaeli.

Jean François Raffaelli, the painter of this populated street scene by the Cathedral of Notre Dame, was born in Paris. Although he was highly impressed by the works of Monet, Raffaelli developed his own unique style early in his career. His unusual technique eventually led to the creation of the so-called Raffaelli colours. He developed an idiosyncratic colouring system using dabs of paint, giving his works a lively and unmistakeable quality which is particularly evident in his Parisian vedutas. Raffaelli received particular renown early in his career for his depictions of the inhabitants of the Paris suburbs.
