The Three Blessed Virgins

Signed lower centre: Leop. Bode.

“Die seligen Jungfraun blond und schön
Im Dufte wohnen auf Bergeshöhn.

Und theilen in Flöckchen die Nebelwolke.”
Bode studied at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt under Jakob Becker and Johann David Passavant as of 1848. He later changed to the class of Eduard von Steinle, who familiarised him with the work of the Nazarenes until 1854. His early pieces are still inspired by their style, but he later moved towards a more romantic vein of history and genre painting. Bode worked together with Steinle on the frescoes for the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, as well as the choir niches of St. Mary's Church in Aachen and the chapel of Prince Löwenstein. He also collaborated on the decoration of the main stairwell in Frankfurt opera house following its completion in 1880.
