André Derain

Les grands arbres
c. 1912

oil on canvas 100 x 85 cm a derain

Around 1908, André Derain, one of the main representatives of Fauvism, turned away from the prevailing art scene and its developments. He continued his work idependently in a complex manner marked by numerous influences. Derain was inspired as much by Paul Cézanne as by the tribal art of Africa and Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine art. The years of working in a somewhat Cubist style led to his so-called 'Gothic Period', beginning in 1911, characterised by a sober palette and a constructive formal vocabulary.
(Guillaume Apollinaire in a Foreword to the exhibit “André Derain,“ Paris 1916, quoted from: André Derain, exhib. cat. Grand Palais, Paris 1977, pp. 17f.).
In 1912, Derain stayed for some time in Vers (Lot) in the Midi-Pyrénées where he painted many views of the landscape. An outstanding regional landmark is the distinctive peak of the Calvary Mountain, which he captured time and again viewed from various perspectives, as can be seen, for example in 'Le calvaire à Vers (Lot)' (Kellermann 209) and 'Le calvaire et l'église de Vers (Lot)' (Kellermann 213). Here in this painting in which the focus is on the slim silhouettes of the trees referred to in the title, the mountain is also recognizable in the background. During these years, Derain was very much preoccupied in focussing on single trees or groups of trees in his landscapes, as exemplified in 'Sous-bois et rochers à Sausset-les-Pins', 1913 (Kellermann 252) or 'Bords de Seine à Carrières-sur-Seine' 1913 (Kellermann 256).
