Ewald Mataré

Mathematik-Kuh II
1946

bronze sculpture Höhe 8,9 cm. Länge 14 cm. Tiefe 8 cm. Einer von höchstens 5 Güssen - Mit hellerer bronzefarbener Patina, an den Kanten aufgelichtet.

Like its smaller predecessor, “Mathematical Cow I”, this “Mathematical Cow II” is highly abstract. It is composed of geometric sections, rhythmically arranged and at sharp angles to one another. The various smooth surfaces, prismatically pushed into and against each other, are highlighted particularly beautifully in this bronze cast. Although the dominating shape is a triangle, all the elements relate to one another and add to a compact overall image of an abstract figure. Most of the surfaces of the cow are sharp edged to some degree. The slim legs tucked underneath the body and the high level of precision employed by the artist add an element of heavy, stocky compactness to the body, but also a certain lightness. Moreover, all other details have been reduced in favour of a very general view of the cow, so that the polygonal head with its forelock, etched into it as a rhombic shape, make it look both decorative and obstinate. According to the catalogue raisonné, the model of this bronze sculpture was probably originally cut in clay.
1946 was the year when Mataré resumed his teaching position at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art. Until 1957 he taught a sculptors' class here which was also attended by Joseph Beuys and Erwin Heerich.
