Keith Haring is considered one of the main representatives of graffiti art which came into being in New York during the 1980s. With his reduced design vocabulary composed of black contours and vibrant colours, he develops his style-defining system of symbols which became part of the 1980s/1990s pop culture. The pyramid is an element of this system and, from the artist's perspective, symbolises a primeval building in which man can focus his strength. For the densely arranged pyramid editions, the pointy shape establishes a fitting analogy which lends Keith Haring's typical subjects a concise expression. Inspired by Pharaonic tombs, he places a single figure at the top of each triangle, sitting enthroned over his hieroglyphs puzzle like a deity.
