Hans Hartung

Untitled
1958

Pastel and charcoal on card. 54.5 x 44 cm. Framed under glass. Signed and dated 'Hartung 58'. - The mat opening browned.

“In the late 50s, Hartung also began to formulate the confident mastery of his lyrical abstraction into large chalk drawings. In these, the wild, unwieldy, forcefully colliding, virtually counteracting and thus turbulent formal world of his chalk and pastel drawings of the late 40s has calmed down to a vibrating harmony. The cheerful equanimity established in the latest India ink and wash drawings has without a doubt influenced this new, stylistically confident form of expression from the outset. However, the change of picture carrier has surely played an integral part in this, as the stiff cardboard could be placed firmly on the easel withstanding the fiercely brandishing hand. More than ever, a musicality penetrates these works, a musicality that indulges itself in melodic harmony and that is hardly influenced by any dissonance. The beautiful, stable regularity is retained, although it expresses itself quite differently”.
