A Berlin KPM porcelain plate from the botanical service for Empress Joséphine

A Berlin KPM porcelain plate from the botanical service for Empress Joséphine

With a delicately painted depiction of "rosa villosa" (apple rose) bordered by palmette motifs on beige ground. Blue sceptre mark, blue enamel dash, impressed 2, mass mark. Diameter 22.8 cm.
1806 - 07.

Although the exact type and decor is recorded in the invoice of the commission for the French Empress, it is still not entirely certain which exact plates belonged to the order for "Sa Majesté l´Impératrice". The service included 72 dessert plates with botanical decor, and apparently started a fashion for this motif. As with numerous fashions inspired by the empress, this too led to the production of numerous further orders in similar quality for other buyers.
