A Berlin KPM botanical porcelain plate with pyrus spectabilis chine

Delicately painted with a Chinese flowering apple branch on pale lilac ground bordered by a foliate design in sepia on peach ground. Blue sceptre mark, blue enamel dash, painter's mark, impressed 16, mass mark. Diameter 24.2 cm.
Ca. 1820.

The Chinese flowering apple had been cultivated in Europe since the mid-18th century. It was first published in 1803 by the scientist and pomologist Moritz Balthasar Borkhausen (1760 - 1806) in his theoretical and practical forestry handbook.
