A Berlin KPM allegorical biscuit porcelain model of the river Thames

An allegorical figure of the river as a bearded man with a cornucopia full of coins, leaning on an overturned pitcher. Inscribed "THAMES" to the reverse. Blue sceptre mark. Both hands and one forearm restored. H 16.5, W 22 cm.

The figure of the Thames as a mythological river god was one of eight river allegories produced by KPM for the Duke of Wellington after 1818. The others are inscribed Kaitna (India), Taio and Douro (Portugal), Ebro (Spain), Garonne, Seine and Sambre (France/Belgium). A drawing of a table place setting shows that the figures were designed to be placed around a central obelisk on the four corners of the table. The various rivers represented phases in the Duke's life and career.
