This small table originates from a series of furniture designed by Carlo Bugatti for Luisa Casati (Mailand 1881 - 1957 London). Casati was a wealthy heiress and patron of the arts, who married twice and was known for her numerous affairs, including a year-long liaison with Gabriele d'Annunzio. She befriended many artists, was photographed by Man Ray and portrayed by many others. Casati was known for her scandalous and extravagant lifestyle. She purchased and refurbished the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which now houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Casati lost her fortune in the 1930s and was forced to sell much of her real estate and art collection, including the pieces by Carlo Bugatti.
