A large Parisian silver plated bronze Napoleon III table service

Designed as a large scalloped oval tray decorated with oak and laurel wreaths. To the centre two plinths supporting groups of putti as allegories of craft and technology, the central group surrounded by four eagles with outstretched wings. The two opposite oval reserves vacant. H 46; W 116; D 55 cm.
Marks of Christofle, ca. 1870.

This opulent centrepiece was based on an identical piece which the French Chemist Henri St. Clair Deville commissioned from Christofle to be made in aluminium and gold in 1858 as a present for Emperor Napoleon III after developing a chemical process for the production of aluminium.
