Allegory of Charity

Oil on canvas (relined). 150 x 113 cm.

The figure of "Caritas", or charity, is one of three personifications of Christian virtues, the others being "Fides" (belief) and "Spes" (hope). The virtue is often depicted as a female figure surrounded by children, due to the idea of selfless love and caring which a mother typically exemplifies.
